2026 Coordinated Congenital Syphilis Prevention
Responding to the congenital syphilis crisis in Oregon

OCEP was invited to participate in the Oregon Coordinated Congenital Syphilis Prevention Workgroup alongside other emergency physicians, public health leaders, obstetric providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders to help develop these recommendations. The result is a practical resource intended to support emergency departments in addressing the growing challenge of congenital syphilis.

These recommendations are not a mandate. Rather, they represent a menu of evidence-informed best practices that may be adapted to the realities of each emergency department. While additional funding and resources will ultimately be important to fully address this issue, partnering with other stakeholders and adopting practical strategies where feasible are meaningful steps toward reducing congenital syphilis in Oregon. We encourage you to review the guide, consider which recommendations may be applicable in your practice, and share them with your colleagues and department leaders.

OCEP thanks Dr. Opher Nadler for representing OCEP members in this important discussion.
